Robots Are Trained for Public Service

In its latest announcement, Google announced Friday that they are working on Robotics Transformer 2 (RT-2), a new artificial intelligence model that will help robots understand tasks like garbage disposal.

The RT-2 is a 'sight-language-action' model trained with information and images from the internet, so robots can turn this information into practical actions.

Even a seemingly simple task like garbage collection requires a series of steps for a robot to learn. First, the robot must identify objects that it can identify as garbage and then be able to collect and discard those objects. Instead of programming the robots how to complete certain tasks, the RT-2 will use information from the internet to help robots understand and perform tasks.

According to Google, the new model can almost double its performance in scenarios that robots have not seen before. Additionally, the RT-2 is reportedly capable of 'judging in a primitive way' when responding to user commands.

However, according to The New York Times, Google is not currently considering launching or selling robots with this technology widely. However, it is thought that in the future these robots could be used in warehouses or as home assistants.
