Samsung Introduced the World's First Transparent MicroLED Display at CES 2024

Samsung introduced the world's first transparent MicroLED display at the CES 2024 event. However, the company did not provide any information on its cost or when it will come to retail devices. Samsung showcased three transparent MicroLED displays with different designs. Two of the demo units were equipped with tinted glass, making it easy to ignore objects behind the panels. Another one looks as transparent as regular glass and has a frameless design.

Transparent MicroLED displays create a floating image, presenting content in an almost holographic experience. Samsung's demo units have a freestanding structure that is only 1 centimeter thick. It is also stated that sharper images are obtained thanks to the high pixel density.

According to Samsung, transparent MicroLED displays are less affected by ambient light because they have higher brightness compared to transparent OLED panels. However, considering the high prices of current non-transparent MicroLED TVs, the prices of transparent MicroLED TVs or monitors are expected to be high. Therefore, it may take time for new displays to become more affordable.

What is MicroLed?

MicroLED is a type of LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology. This technology is a display technology created by combining many tiny LEDs. Each micro LED can produce its own light and be controlled. MicroLED displays have the advantage of being smaller and thinner than traditional LED displays.

MicroLED technology attracts attention with its features such as high brightness, contrast ratio and color accuracy. It is also a technology similar to OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays, but with the potential to last longer. The ability of each pixel to produce its own light makes it possible to achieve a better black level and more vibrant colors.
