What is Frequency Shift Modulation (FSK)?

Before moving on to the concept of FSK, let's define the concept of modulation:

Modulation

Modulation is the process of changing the characteristics of a carrier signal by the information signal to be transmitted. An information signal is usually a very low frequency and low energy signal. This signal is difficult to transmit directly over long distances and is not possible to transmit with sufficient power. Therefore, the information signal is modulated with a carrier signal. Modulation is accomplished by changing the frequency, amplitude, phase or other characteristics of the carrier signal by the information signal. Thus, the carrier signal has the characteristics of the carrier, allowing the information signal to be transmitted over long distances.

Frequency-shift modulation (FSK) is a type of modulation that consists of modulating digital signals by changing the carrier frequency. This type of modulation changes the carrier of digital signals as opposed to analog signals and is often used in digital data transmission.

FSK modulation is a type of bi-level modulation in which two carrier frequencies are used. Usually, one carrier frequency represents the "1" bit and the other carrier frequency represents the "0" bit. Digital data is modulated by changing the carrier frequency as bits "1" and "0", for example by passing it through the data output of a computer.

FSK modulation is used in most digital communication systems. These include walkie-talkies, smartphones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, satellite communications, wireless microphones and remote controls.

The FSK modulation type is used in various electronic systems.

Remote control vehicles: Car, helicopter, drone, etc. Remote controlled vehicles such as FSK modulation are controlled using FSK modulation.

Wireless microphones: FSK modulation is widely used in signal transmission in wireless microphones.

Smartphones: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and other wireless technologies are based on digital communication protocols using FSK modulation.

Satellite communication: Communication systems broadcasting from satellite transmit signals using FSK modulation.

Radio transmitters: Radio transmitters perform data transfer by using the FSK method in the modulation of radio signals.

Industrial control systems: FSK modulation is used in many application areas such as industrial control systems.
